DJ Guidelines
Guidelines for how DJs participate on Gutsy Radio
Station Mission
Provide instruction, infrastructure, and promotion for live internet radio and other types of broadcasting to a decentralized community of music and radio lovers.
Operational Info
All shows are broadcast / performed live. No pre-recorded show or replay of an earlier show can be aired.
All shows are 2 hours in length unless you’ve previously arranged for a different length.
Shows are listed on the Gutsy Radio website schedule / calendar as “First_name in State” (Mark in MD for example). You are welcome to name your show and use performer names as they like.
Gutsy Radio provides a listing of all shows, and a daily, weekly, monthly schedule on our website. The station also provides a way for all DJs to post show announcements to our Instagram and Facebook accounts. While Gutsy does some promotion for the entire station, we count on our DJs and community members to get the word out. Please promote your show and Gutsy Radio!
All Gutsy Radio DJs, broadcasters and staff are volunteers and donate their time to making great radio.
Gutsy Radio is community-supported by listeners and DJs alike. While it is definitely not a requirement for a show, the station is grateful for recurring or one-time donations from DJs to help keep us on air and ad free. Please consider donating if you can.
Gutsy Radio is managed by a Board of Directors who lead 4 committees: Programming (management of schedule and DJ on-boarding), Operations (licensing and policies), Promotion (advertising, PD, merchandise, and website), and Finance (fundraising and accounting). The station encourages all DJs to participate in one or more committees to help run the radio station.
Show Content Guidelines
All shows on Gutsy Radio are freeform—the format, content and sequence is entirely up to the DJ. You are free to experiment and deviate as you like with your show. Please note music and content that is hate speech or slanderously targets an individual or group is not allowed. Be respectful. Have a good time.
While politics and personal opinions are certainly allowed to be part of the content of your show, please consider using music to express your perspective.
In order to prevent someone from illegally recording albums, do not play more than three tracks in the same sequence from the same album during your show.
The copyrights laws for recorded works that aren't music are different. Unless released as part of an official soundtrack, do not play spoken dialog from movies, tv shows, plays, or audio books.
Reading more than short samples from published books and periodicals under copyright protection is not allowed.
Show and Broadcast Requirements
Missing a show is OK. But, it is your responsibility to find a replacement for any show you need to miss (instructions for requesting a show sub are here). Please follow up with DJs who are interested in subbing.
Once found, all substitutions, as well as if a sub couldn’t be found, must be sent to gutsyradio@gmail.com so the schedule can be updated. Please be sure to “reply all” so the group can track the substitution.
If you miss a show, please make it up by subbing for another show.
To maintain our listener base the station must broadcast reliably. Consistently performing your show is key to this. Missing a show more than 2 times in 6 months for an every 4 week show, more than 2 times in 3 months for an every 2 week show, or 2 times in 6 weeks for an every week show, without reasonable cause communicated to the scheduling crew, will make your slot available for others. If you have something happening that causes frequent show absences, please let us know. There is flexibility.
